Smartphone sales increase and Samsung dominates - Samsung is formally the largest mobile phone manufacturer and beside Apple, dominates the smartphone market.According to a report from analysis analyst firm Gartner, Samsung oversubscribed 97 million phones throughout Q3 - comprising 22.9 per cent of the market, Nokia is in second place with 19.2 per cent Apple third with five.5 per cent.
Apple and Samsung dominate the smartphone market - dominant forty six.5 per cent, with different manufactures, per Anshul Gupta from Gartner - “fighting over a far off third spot.” RIM and HTC taking third and fourth places, pushing Nokia into seventh place.
Interestingly worldwide mobile phone sales dropped by 3.1 per cent in comparison to the same period last year, but smartphone sales have increased, now accounting for 46.9 per cent of the total mobile phone sales. Gupta comments: “In mature markets, we finally saw replacement sales pick up with the launch of new devices in the quarter.”
In the battle of the operating systems. Android market share increased to 72.4 per cent from 52.5 per cent in Q3 2011. iOS is second with 13.9 per cent, RIM 5.3 per cent and Microsoft 2.4 per cent. Windows Phone sales fell as customers waited for new Windows Phone 8 devices and Gartner analysts predicted iOS market share will increase during Q4 following the launch of the iPhone 5.
